Sometimes, checking Instagram on a particularly depressing Monday morning, I will catch sight of an inspirational quote. 'Today is the first day of the rest of your life!' it encourages. Or, 'Shoot for the stars and you might end up with the moon!' it beams. And suddenly, my Monday isn’t quite so bad. It’s much, much worse.
Don’t get me wrong; the right inspo quote at the right time can really help me get my shit together when I’ve spent the morning faffing on Facebook. And actually, while I’m about setting the record straight, Mondays are usually pretty good, as they’re a welcome release from 48 hours solid childcare.
But still my point stands: clichéd, sugar-sweet, cheerleader-style inspirational quotes are a load of Trump. This is because they don’t connect with a world in which you’ve been up all night with a vomming child, your IBS is a bitch due to late night cheese binging, and you didn’t hear the doorbell when DHL tried to deliver the shoes you were planning to wear tonight, so they’ve been sent back to the depot. Fuck.
That’s why the inspo quotes that get it right are the ones with a bit of edge, a bit of sarcasm – the ones that are just a little bit sweary, to help you live your dirty, imperfect life. And when I find these diamonds in the rough, I like to have them polished up and placed on my sofas and my walls and my coffee table, and I encourage you to do the same. That way, when Saturday arrives, with its squabbling kids and lack of lie-in, your cushions will keep you calm.
