When I was seven, I had the best scented rubber collection in the whole class. Sparkly rainbows, tiny pastel ice creams, even a rubber 'lipstick' that pushed out of its plastic holder. After my blue suede tucker boots (never have I loved a pair of shoes more) my rubber collection was my most prized possession - although of course I never actually used them to rub anything out - heaven forbid!
I've loved stationery since the 1980s, long before #stationeryaddict was a thing. Messing around on Instagram is all very well, but you can't beat a piece of paper when it comes to writing lists, making plans and generally getting organised. As our lives are increasingly digitized, it's never been more important to take ourselves away from screens and towards three-dimensional objects we can touch, draw on...and even sniff.
But despite my passion for paper, I haven't really indulged in it since I left university. The last couple of years have been spent hotdesking in cafes and shared workspaces; the few years before that I was a full-time mum and could barely remember my name, let alone write it in a pretty notepad; and before THAT I was working in magazine/advertising offices where a stationery cupboard came as standard.
Now I have a room of my own to work in, my shocking stationery situation is all too apparent: where do I put that pile of urgent papers? Has anyone seen my ruler? And where on earth am i going to keep all those rolls of wallpaper? So when Paperchase contacted me a few weeks ago when my study renovation was nearly complete, their timing had all the precision of a freshly sharpened pencil. Did I want to go on a supermarket sweep at Paperchase, with a view to completely refreshing my desk/spring cleaning my life? Did I ever! Show me the trolley!
Here's my haul as styled in my spanking new study. All photos by Susie Lowe. Credits and click-through links for each Paperchase item at the bottom...
